Voices

Voices

Lani stood at the counter, cutting up onions, carrots, celery, and cabbage. She glanced over at the stove, where a pot of water was boiling. The voices were in her head again, and she needed to quiet them. She carefully placed the vegetables in the water, adding salt and pepper. She watched the bubbles rise. At the last minute, she grabbed the garlic, cut up a couple of cloves, and added them. She placed the lid on the pot, and turned the stove down. Her wish would be honored – the voices would be silent. For a time, at least.
